Thousands of protesters marched on Monday night in Tarout in Eastern Province, during the funeral procession for 18-year-old Hussein Yousef al-Qallaf, who died of his injuries on Friday after he was allegedly shot in the chest by a police officer during clashes with the police.

Protesters and mourners also asked for the release of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nemr al-Nemr. His arrest on July 8 has sharply escalated tensions in the oil-producing eastern province.

Activists shared videos and photos of last night's demonstration showings thousands of Saudis, men and women, marching and chanting.

For the past two days, members of the Shiite community have been demonstrating in Tarout to denounce the death of al-Qallaf.

Early July, activists accused Saudi forces of killing two demonstrators during an anti-regime protest. The victims were identified as Akbar Hassan Shakhouri and Mohammedredha Felfel.

The eastern province, where live about 2 millions Shiite Muslims, has been experiencing turmoil since March 2011 when Saudi troops were invited by the government of neighbouring Bahrain to help its Sunni royal family quash a popular uprising by the Shiite majority.

Since November at least 11 people have died in Saudi's eastern province in protests by members of Saudi Arabia's Shi'ite minority over what they see as entrenched discrimination.
